Albus liked his solitude as much as any man. He liked sitting in silence in front of a warm fire with a glass of fire whiskey, a package of treats and a good book. He was only human after all. However, there was a thrill he got each year on the first day of term at Hogwarts. When the students flooded into the school. Talking happily and with large smiles. Yes, some of the staff remained living at Hogwarts during the summer and there were always the house elves but it was not quite the same.
Dressed in light blue and gold robes, Albus swung open the double doors of the Great Hall. The vast room was empty right now. Lit candles were suspended high in the air and the long for house house tables shone in the light. On each table were dozens of golden place settings waiting to be loaded down with delicious food.
He moved slowly up an aisle towards the head table and gazed up at the enchanted ceiling as he went. It depicted the set sun in the coming night sky. Laid out on the head table were pitchers of water and butter beer. Albus made his way along the rows of chairs and then slowly sunk into his chair at the center of the table before pouring himself a drink. He then sat back and gazed out over the room.
The world was perfect right now. He knew of course hat had been happening. He had spent a great deal of time this summer at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Many meetings of The Order of the Phoenix had been held. There had been the ministry hearing for Harry Potter. There had been the attacks on Muggles. Yet right now, right here, everything was as it should be. For one night, he could relax.
Albus was drawn from his thoughts by approaching footsteps.
