" the question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me " - ayn rand
PERSONALITY ▹ muggleborn ravenclaw faye oberlin is at the very top of her class. she constantly borders between falling absolutely head over heels for magic, while also being severely exasperated that she has to keep re-dipping her pegasus feather quill every five seconds instead of just using a pen. known by her fellow students as being hardworking, intelligent, and quite pretty, faye tends to keep everyone at a distance. booksmart & determined, faye is a highly intelligent young lady who always makes a point to carry herself with grace and dignity. rarely does she let her emotions show, in a both a way to appear perpetually calm and cool, but to also not appear vulnerable to what others have to say about her. to those who don't know her very well, faye comes off as being standoffish, cold, and perhaps even a bit uptight - in other words, she makes a perfect ravenclaw stereotype. in truth, faye is just horrible at socializing with others, having always kept her nose in books growing up and thus, rarely ever making any friends. and those friends that she had made, well... let's just say she prefers the company of her books over people for a reason.
however, for those who manage to worm their way past her tightly guarded walls will find a protective and caring friend, motherly in nature but also surprisingly fun to be around. she has a very witty and sharp sense of humor, often bordering on dry most of the time, and seems to enjoy teasing others playfully. she has been described as being mature for her age - both mentally and physically. she is noted for being rather pretty amongst her peers, although this mixed with her naturally guarded demeanor often makes her seem all the more unapproachable and intimidating. it doesn't help that faye is strong-willed and always aims high - and rarely anything will stop her from achieving her goals. despite her level-headed appearance, faye is someone who is rather lonely, whether she realizes it or not. perhaps this year will finally be the year she makes actual friends.
DESCRIPTION medium-long honey blonde hair often styled with loose curls & waves. her eyes, almond-shaped with long dark lashes, are a stormy dark grey in color. she has pale cream skin, a slight hourglass build with long legs, and a straight nose that will often scrunch up ever so slightly whenever she is displeased, deep in thought, or annoyed. unlike other wizards, her muggle clothing is actually quite fashionable, deeply inspired by the 1960s. her favorite colors to wear are navy, black, and silver.
HISTORY ▹ faye is muggleborn, although her wizarding blood is rather recent. her grandfather was a squib from a long line of wizarding ancestors. her father, elias oberlin, grew up aware of the wizarding world but his father died before he could properly tell his son all about it. so when faye got her hogwarts letter, her father was way more excited than she was. her younger childhood days were extremely happy and loving. her mother, a law professor at cambridge university, was after out of the house for work so it was elias, a local newspaper columnist working from home, that primarily raised faye. her happiest memories are of her and her father dancing and singing to the 1960s muggle records her father was obsessed with, or her father reading fairy tales with the silliest voices to make faye laugh. of course, her mother would always scold them when she got home and found out that faye hadn't been doing any of her homework for school. her mother, marianna oberlin, was a lot more strict than elias was, and when faye was around the age of 8 did she begin to really instill the importance of an education in her daughter. her childish fairy tale books were replaced with books with no pictures, her homework had to be finished before dinner, and her grades could never slip below a B. although this put a lot of pressure on the young girl, faye quickly took to reading and would spend days with her nose in a book and a record of the beach boys playing in the background.
when she received her hogwarts letter, she was pleasantly surprised. she had only read about magic in fantasy books like the hobbit and the black cauldron. she never envisioned herself as a witch, though, but was eager to learn anything and everything she possibly could about magic. her first year at hogwarts was spent with countless hours in the library, reading up on transfiguration, potions, and charms and trying to find the science behind it all. she was enamored with magic from the first moment she truly witnessed it. she barely made any friends her first and second years because she was so interested in learning about magic and all of her time and energy was spent dedicated to that particular subject. her third year her obsession was beginning to wane, especially when she realized how lonely she truly was at school. it was probably the teen hormones that made her more self-conscious. however, faye struggled with interacting with her peers - she had always been used to others approaching her first and initiating a conversation, so her having to suddenly try it was off-putting for the girl. while others were going out with friends to hogsmeade and chatting during meals in the great hall, faye found that she only had the company of her books. she was too proud to admit any sort of her defeat, though, and so she always acted like not having friends and being left alone was what she wanted. this is when she began to get a reputation for being "uptight".
it was actually her mother that comforted faye when she came home for the summer. faye will never forget the advice that her mother gave her: "make them want to be friends with you". her mom was right, faye thought, and so she poured her heart and soul into doing just that. her aim was to become the top of her class - to be the best. then maybe people would come flocking to her for advice, for help, for thoughts and ideas and debates. instead, it most likely did the opposite. her rising to the top of her class meant that others viewed her as being a "know-it-all", thinking that she was "better than everyone else" or that she was "trying to hard" and "sucking up" to the teachers. it didn't help that faye was particularly active during classes and showcased her intelligence at any given moment. the worst part about it all was that faye thought it was working when it really, really wasn't. there was a boy in her year, a fellow ravenclaw, who began to chat with faye and ask her for help with his homework. almost every day he would come and ask faye for help, and since he seemed so eager to be her friend and talk with her, faye began to trust him. eventually, she was so wrapped around his finger that she ended up doing his homework entirely for him. she only came to her senses one late-winter day when she had a small breakdown upon realizing how much work she had to do not only for herself, but for her supposed "friend" as well. she thought it best to tell the boy that she couldn't do his homework for him anymore, expecting him to be grateful that she did it for him in the first place and understanding about it all - but the opposite happened. he yelled at her, shouted at her, backed her into a corner and everything. he even tried to guilt trip her, and then when she still refused, he threatened to stop talking to her. by then, she was fighting tears because the only person who had tried to befriend her at hogwarts was twisting her feelings in his anger. for a moment, her 15-year-old self wavered - she couldn't lose her first ever friend! if she didn't have him, who would she have? but luckily for her, her common sense won out in the end when she realized this guy was kind of an all-around jerk. he was only using her because she was smart and easy to manipulate. so she promised herself that such a thing would never happen again. the only thing she could trust in her life was her books. and, just like that, her guarded walls were build high so no one could hurt her like that again.
now in her sixth year, faye is a prefect and aiming for head girl next year. although she is civil with other students and nice to her dorm mates, faye is, overall, very isolated from them. her peers view her as being intimidating, emotionless, and uptight - a know-it-all. but all faye really needs in her life is the feeling of friendship, and the laughter she used to do so often when she was younger, dancing to 1960s music with her father singing the lyrics in his loudest voice possible.
FAMILY ▹ elias oberlin - the son of a squib, who learned of the magical world at a very young age. however, his squib father died when he was young, so he never was able to fully learn about the witches and wizards who actually lived amongst them. this is probably what spurred elias into dedicating his life to studying mysteries, anomalies, cryptid monsters. he works for a local newspaper as a weekly columnist writing about his precious anomalies and mysteries. most people - well, actually, all people - don't take him seriously, but that never bothers him. faye describes her father as being quirky, kind-hearted, adventurous, and bold. he always puts his family before himself, without straying from the things that also make him happy in life. it is obvious that faye holds a lot of love and respect for her dad, and always has a blast with him when they go shopping for school supplies every summer at diagon alley.
▹ marianna oberlin - although faye hates to admit it, she actually takes after her mother a lot more in looks and personality than she does with her father. tall, brooding, and commanding, marianna oberlin is an extremely intelligent woman who rarely lets anything or anyone get to her. she, like faye, has a hard time expressing herself openly, which often leads to a lot of misunderstandings between faye and her. while faye seems to think that her mother is pushing her much too hard, marianna only does so because she truly wants her daughter to succeed in life - she just has a tough time of showing it any other way. marianna is a professor of law at cambridge university, and she always secretly wanted faye to become a lawyer one day. needless to say, she was sufficiently horrified when she learned that faye wasn't even learning intermediate algebra at hogwarts, and so she took it upon herself to find summer tutors for faye to teach her everything she should be learning at a normal muggle high school, including world history, algebra, english, and biology.
