Zacharias was blessed with quite a good memory, so he remembered others' birthdays and often prepared gifts for them in advance. Tomorrow it was his Mother's birthday and he wanted to get her something different. Usually he went for a bouquet of Nightshade or Singing Begonias; but Zach had bought her something that would last a lot longer: her very own pet Puffskein. The creature was a primrose golden sort of colour; covered in soft, down-like fur with small ears and a friendly, sweet-looking face that he knew girls and women cooed over. He'd never actually owned one himself, feeling it better suited for females and children, but now that he'd had the Puffskein housed in the cage inside his dormitory for the last week; he was actually feeling rather sorry to let it go.
He ascended the staircase of the owlery one evening: the Puffskein's cage was gripped in his right hand and a blanket was draped over his left. He did not own an owl, so he always had to use one of the school ones. Fortunately they were very efficient on getting letters and parcels delivered on time.
Entering the windowless, draughty room he stepped cautiously over the wood floor and tried to avoid any droppings or half-eaten vermin. Looking up at the perches, his eyes locked on a screech owl and he made way towards her. This one actually liked him. A lot of the other school owls disliked him - for some reason - and always nipped at his fingers. The female owl gave a hoot as a greeting.
Zach put the cage onto the floor and placed the blanket over it. The Puffskein inside hummed louder, sounding excited. There were several three-legged stools around the room (much like the one they sat on through sorting in first year) and Zach reached out to one, dragging it over towards the cage. Sitting on top of it, he then pulled out some parchment from the inside of his robes - a quill - some ink - then paused, looking thoughtful.
Apart from the owls hooting and scratching around on their perches, the room was very quiet and very empty. He found it a little unnerving...
