Appearance: Right-handed, burly/athletic-lean build, wide shoulders, a little over six feet. Has wiry, curly blond hair and has a very laid-back style of dress. Usually his school shirt is untucked and his tie loosened. Naturally he has very broad shoulders, inherited from his Father's side of the family, but his upper body is fairly muscular for a boy of his age. He has deep, hazel eyes that can look very green or light brown. There's this constant look of smugness on his face that doesn't disappear very easily.
History:
- Cormac is the second child of Carrick and Alice McLaggen: a Northern Irish family who have lived in the country's capital for many generations. Both Carrick and Alice have muggles in their family tree, where a muggle-born son or daughter must have been born somewhere in the nineteenth century; which makes Cormac and his sister half-bloods by definition. His sister, Orlaith, was born about a year before Cormac.
- In his early years, the McLaggen family were not very well off. They struggled, by all accounts, but were always well-connected thanks to Cormac's uncle (his Father's brother) Tiberius McLaggen; who always a very influential member of the Ministry. His uncle used to introduce the family to esteemed members of their society, and Cormac was always jealous of the sons and daughters on their toy broomsticks and having whatever they wished.
- In 1986, Cormac's grandmother died and left her inheritance to her two sons: Carrick and Tiberius. Tiberius (very generously) gave half of his share back to Carrick, as he had children to support and he felt it fairer. Ever since then, Cormac felt blessed. The family could afford to go to Quidditch games, and he'd never seen anything like it.
- Cormac started Hogwarts in 1990, alongside others such as Cho Chang and Katie Bell. He and Katie Bell already knew one another, as their families often went to see Quidditch games together and supported the same team - the Cork Quidditch team. He was not anticipating to be sorted into Gryffindor, as his sister had already landed a year before and was sorted into Hufflepuff. Katie was also sorted into Gryffindor, but they were never extremely close friends. In fact, Katie seemed to dislike him more and more as the years went on.
- An avid flyer already: it didn't take Cormac long to impress his other classmates with his ability. He had always centred his focus on Beater position, knowing full well that he was the right build for it, but there was always someone occupying the positions of beaters on the Gryffindor quidditch team. So he practised playing other positions as well.
- The professors at Hogwarts were never particularly impressed by Cormac. He was always tardy, full of excuses and clearly didn't pay much attention in class; preferring to spend the time chatting or fooling around. Although he isn't the most notable of troublemakers, he doesn't exactly stay within the lines either.
- Last year, Cormac let everyone know (who cared to actually listen to him) that he was going to put his name into the Goblet of Fire: believing foolishly that he 'looked at least seventeen' anyway. While that was true enough, he was thrown back immediately by the age line and sported a beard for the remainder of the day. He was not impressed.
- In that same year, Cormac asked Katie Bell to the Yule Ball. Surprisingly she said yes. He had asked Angelina Johnson and Cho Chang before going to Katie (both of which refused), so it was fairly last minute. He had a very good time, but it's difficult to say whether Katie did. She may have agreed to go with him for her own reasons, and not the reasons Cormac assumed (that she was really into him, that is).
- Cormac is now in his sixth year at Hogwarts taking Potions, Herbology, Astronomy, Charms and Alchemy for his NEWT examinations in the following year. While he isn't entirely convinced of You-Know-Who's return, he's more preoccupied with turning heads back to him and not Harry Potter: the guy needs a break anyway, right?
Personality: Active, adventurous, arrogant, foolhardy, insensitive, flirtatious, attention-seeking, overly confident, salacious, greedy, fun-loving, impatient, practical, skilled flier, deft potion-maker, poor at theoretical work, disorganised.
A rambunctious, foolhardy and often hot-tempered boy; Cormac illustrates all the negative connotations of Gryffindor house, which rolled into one doesn't make the most likeable of personalities. Instead of being self-sacrificing and concerned for others' welfare, he is primarily focused on himself and how he comes across. He eagerly demonstrates his daring to an audience of witnesses, but merely due to his desire for attention and to be put in the limelight. Being so well-connected in the Wizarding world, Cormac lacks modesty and loves to boast, but he prefers to speak of his own successes and ambitions for the future - which are mostly to do with professional Quidditch. If you're a girl, you probably won't want to be stuck in the same room as him. He's going to try and put it on you.
Likes and Dislikes: Likes to be the centre of attention, flirting with girls, playing Quidditch, talking about himself and proving his worth. Dislikes not getting his own way, being ignored, studying, losing to other people he feels are pipsqueaks and having to get up in the morning.
