He fought during the first war, and murdered a young girl's family, and he's been in prison since then.

Her mother was the one who raised her, due to her father being in Azkaban. They aren't exactly close.
--Reese Travers (Older brother, would be about 32 now, deceased.)
He died during the first war, so she never knew him.Biography:
Gabriella was.... something of a surprise. Her brother was already seventeen when she was born, and her parents hadn't intended to have a second child. They wanted an heir, and they already had one in Reese. Given that she wasn't exactly wanted, it would be fair to say that she was loved by her only sibling much more than her parents loved her.
Unfortunately, the following year, he fought in and died on the tail end of the first war. Their father went to prison, and she was left with her less than kind mother.
It's quite hard to discern whether it was the death of Michelle's only son, her husband being sent to prison, or the war in general that hardened her to the person she still is today.
Regardless of the reason, Gabby was greatly neglected as a child. She was given anything she could possibly want, but she often passed from tutor to babysitter or nanny. It wasn't that her mother wasn't around- She was, but usually she was more interested in gossiping with her friends or planning lavish parties. It was more important to her to keep up the appearance of a normal family than it was to actually take care of her own child. She tried to buy Gabby's love with things, but it never worked. Their relationship has been strained for years now.
That's why, when she was eleven, she was overjoyed to get her Hogwarts letter.
Finally, a reason to leave the damned manor! She thought to herself when it first arrived.
"Make sure you pick Slytherin, dear." Her mother chided. "I don't think that's how it works, ma'am." She had told her mum at the time, to which Mrs. Travers laughed and responded with "Of course it is, honey. The hat listens to your wants and desires. Besides, everyone in our family has been Slytherin, I'm sure you have those traits too."
This is how she ended up in Slytherin- Because she was told to choose that House. The Sorting Hat wanted to put her in Ravenclaw, but she insisted on being put in the cunning house in an attempt to make her mother proud.
Silly, silly little Gabriella. That was a decision she would later come to regret. She doesn't like or even get along with the majority of her House and now, four years later, her mother thinks she can get her to do whatever she asks. With the Dark Lord rising again, Michelle has now set her sights on getting her daughter a Dark Mark (which Gabby really DOES NOT want) as soon as possible.OOC
